May Faire is simply magic. After the long winter it is a joyous occasion to celebrate the arrival of spring. Our entire Mountain Sage Community gathers together on a Saturday morning. The celebration begins by everyone decorating our cloth may crowns. We will be decorating our May Crowns with beauty from nature this year. Please look as you are out walking or playing for lovely plants to adorn our crowns.
The children will have been practicing for weeks their songs and dances to share with everyone, including some classes dancing around our majestic maypole.
One of our traditions is the choosing of the May Queen and May King. The girls in one circle and the boys in another sit down, ever so quietly, with their hands held out. The May Fairy flitters over and, ever so carefully, puts a tiny bit of grain in each child's hands. Next, our special guest chicken is placed in the middle of the circle. All the children watch, silently and expectantly, hoping the chicken will choose his or her grain to nibble. Whomever is chosen by the chicken are crowned King and Queen. A memorable occasion indeed! Please visit this page for the story that we share with the children at school.
New this year! Parents and families are also welcome to come into the school common area to have a look at a sampling of our school curriculum through the grades - after the festivities at 11:30 - noon.

We will be decorating our May Crowns with beauty from nature this year. In our endeavor to be a very sustainably minded community, we will not be providing cut flowers for the crowns. Please look as you are out walking or playing for lovely plants, growing or even dried from last year, to adorn our crowns.

May Faire Schedule: 9:00 - 9:30 Making May Crowns - Create a beautiful crown from treasures found in nature. Everyone bring something! 9:30 - Listen for the bell to ring and gather around for the choosing of the May Queen and King. Girls will go first. The May Fairy will flit through and give each of the children a small bit of grain. The chicken will be placed gently in the middle and while everyone is very, very quiet and still, we will wait for the chicken to eat from one child’s hand. The first boy and first girl from each group will be crowned May King and Queen. After the crowning (by the May Fairy), we will follow the King and Queen in a procession around the school yard to our seating near the Maypole. Signs will designate where each class will sit and the families may sit behind the students. During the procession we will all together sing "Hey Ho to the Greenwood" which is below for your listening and learning pleasure. 10:00 - Welcome! Teachers will sing a song to the community. 10:15 - Begin singing and dancing!
End - Our community will gather together round the maypole to sing the "Circle Dance Song" happily ending our May Faire. From 11:30-noon we will have optional picnic outside and a viewing a sampling of our school curriculum through the grades. |

May Faire songs for you to learn and sing with us during the procession led by the May King and May Queen to our gathering around the May Pole and during our community dance around the May Pole to complete our festival. Plus the pieces the children and musicians will perform during the maypole dances. These pieces were recorded over the iPhone, so enjoy them as they are :)
We would love it if you would learn Hey Ho to the Greenwood and Circle Dance Song to sing with us during the procession and around the maypole to end the Faire. Thank you!
Hey Ho to the Greenwood
Hey ho, to the greenwood now let us go, Sing heave and ho, And there shall we find both buck and doe, Sing heave and ho, The hart the hind and the little pretty roe, Sing heave and ho. |
Circle Dance Song
Round and round we go We hold each other’s hands We weave our lives in a circle Our love is strong and the dance goes on |
